What are Dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic teeth and gums designed to replace teeth you may have lost due to injury, disease, or age. They are custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth, which makes them comfortable, and they look natural and like real teeth.

Types of Dentures

There are two main types of dentures: partial dentures and full dentures.

Partial Dentures

Dr. Don S. Wyatt will recommend partial dentures when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. They come from acrylic, cobalt chrome, or thermoplastic nylon.

Full dentures come into play when the natural teeth in the upper or lower jaw are missing. Full dentures come from acrylic or composite resin and can be removable or fixed.

Process

for Getting Dentures

The process of getting dentures starts with an initial visit to the dentist. Dr. Don S. Wyatt will examine your teeth and gums to determine the best option based on oral health. Once the patient is ready for dentures, a mold is taken from your mouth and sent to the lab to create the custom-fit dentures. At the next appointment, he will ensure the fit is perfect and the bite is in good order. Adjustments will be made, and you will receive instructions on caring for your new dentures.

  • Oral Hygiene: We strongly recommend you continue to take care of your oral hygiene, brush twice daily, floss, and use mouthwash once daily. This will ensure your smile stays healthy.
  • Diet: After receiving All-on-4s, you must stick to a soft diet for several days to avoid damaging your new implants. Avoid hot and cold drinks and foods, as well as sticky and hard foods, during this healing period.

Caring

for Dentures

Dentures require daily cleaning; we strongly encourage removing the dentures and cleaning them every night. They also need proper storage in an appropriate solution when not in use. Patients should follow other essential oral hygiene habits, including brushing and flossing (if they have any natural teeth), to prevent plaque buildup that can affect the fit of the dentures over time.

What are the Benefits of Dentures?

restored Chewing Ability

One of the most significant benefits of getting dentures is that they restore your chewing ability. Restoring the ability to chew allows you to eat solid foods more comfortably and adequately. Additionally, it increases your nutritional options, essential in maintaining good overall physical health.

improved Speech

When you lose teeth, it can affect how you speak. Dentures help fill the gaps left by missing teeth so you can talk normally and easily. Filling the gaps left by missing teeth will help you feel more confident speaking and make social interactions more comfortable.

better Appearance

Today’s dentures are typically made from high-quality materials that closely resemble the look of natural teeth. They complement your mouth and blend in with the rest of your facial features. Modern dentures are hard to differentiate from natural teeth, meaning you can confidently restore your smile.

increased Social Confidence

You feel more confident in social situations when you have a full set of teeth. An incomplete set of teeth can make you self-conscious, hesitant to smile or laugh, and even avoid social gatherings. Dentures can help you feel confident in social situations and restore your self-esteem.
